What to Look For in Home Movers

If you're moving soon, you likely want to hire home movers to ensure your belongings arrive at your new home safely and quickly. But most cities have several moving companies to choose from. So how do you pick the right one? Here's what to look for in your next home movers:

They're Licensed and Insured

If your new home is in another city, find a company that has a state-issued license. If you're moving to another state entirely, look for home movers with a US DOT number. Also, you need to make sure your movers have the proper insurance, since this will protect you if anything goes wrong during the move.

They Have Good Reviews

The best way to get an idea if you'll be happy with your movers is to check their reviews. You should see at least a few posted to online review sites like Yelp or Google+. The company's Facebook page may also have reviews left by customers. An occasional bad review in a sea of good ones may not be a reason to not hire movers, but beware of companies that have mostly average and below-average reviews.

Their Rates Are Reasonable

You don't have to go with the least expensive home movers, but the company you choose should at least be competitive when it comes to rates. If you're not sure what the going rate for home movers is, gather price quotes from a few companies. Many list them on their websites, so it shouldn't take much time to compare rates before you choose a moving company. Find out what services the rates include, too.

They Have the Services You Need

If you just need a team to load and unload your moving truck, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a moving company to help. But, if you need additional services, be sure the home movers you choose can provide them. For example, if you're planning a long-distance move, need help packing, or need to have a piano professionally moved, ensure the home movers you choose offer this service.

They Can Move Your Belongings Safely

Not all home movers are the same when it comes to the care they show your possessions. If you have fragile or irreplaceable items, protect them by hiring home movers who will exercise caution during the move. This includes wrapping furniture and decor so they don't get scratched, and protecting the walls and doorways of both your old and new home. If you hire the movers to pack your belongings, make sure they cushion any fragile items in each box.
