Moving Estimate Less Expensive Not Always Best

Moving Quotes: Cheaper Doesn’t Mean Better

It’s natural to want to find the most affordable price available when you're about to undertake a big move, but it’s crucial to remember that cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Opting for a cheap moving quote is more likely to result in horrible experiences, including theft, loss, damaged items or prices that suddenly skyrocket on moving day.

Now, this doesn’t mean that all affordable moving companies are out to scam you, but it does mean that you owe it to yourself to do your due diligence when you get a moving quote that is significantly lower than the competition.

Here’s how you can do some research to determine if a low-balling company is legitimate:

READ REVIEWS

One of the best things you can do is find out how other customers felt about their experiences with the moving company you're considering. How are their reviews? Were customers satisfied? Just as important, are there any reviews to actually read? A total lack of reviews can be a bigger red flag for a company than a couple of dissatisfied ones.

FIND OUT IF THEY’RE AMSA CERTIFIED

Give extra consideration for members of the American Moving & Storage Association. To join AMSA, these companies had to pass both background screenings with government authorities as well as their local chapter of the Better Business Bureau. They have also pledged to uphold the AMSA Code of Ethics. For an even more exclusive membership, look for ProMover members – these special companies have taken an extra step to complete a quality certification program.

CONFIRM THAT THEY’RE BOTH LICENSED AND INSURED

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), making sure that your mover is licensed and insured is crucial to ensuring that you obtain the best and most reliable service available.

If you are looking for an interstate mover, they should have a U.S. DOT number issued by the FMCSA.

If you are moving within your state, requirements may vary depending on where you live. New York State requires its local movers to register with the New York State Department of Transportation as well as with the Motor Carrier Compliance Bureau.

REQUEST BACKGROUND CHECKS ON EMPLOYEES

You're going to trust these movers with your personal possessions. Make sure that they are going to be professionally responsible for your most valuable property. Ask if those working on your move are full-time employees or temps, and request their background checks.

When entrusting a company with your move, don’t take the cheapest route. You want top quality when you're shopping for your family automobile or your child's car seat--and you should demand top quality in your moving company, too. This will give you the peace of mind knowing that you have experienced, reliable professionals on your side.
