Move, Store, Sell, or Throw Out: How to Declutter your Move

Decluttering is the process of organization where you streamline the items in view. It creates a calming atmosphere and looks cleaner, classier, and is more efficient to clean (less dust collectors).

The decision to let go of certain items isn’t always an easy one. Sometimes we attach emotion to items we keep around us. It takes some grit and quite a bit of soul searching. The two most important questions you must ask about each item is: What purpose does this serve? And does that purpose serve me? If you can whittle down the items that make it through the second phase of questions, you will be rewarded with a move to a new home that truly offers a fresh start

So what to do with the other stuff?

First of all, items that are broken, stained, or irreparably damaged should be thrown away. Immediately.

That leaves us with items that might not go with your updated décor, no longer fit, or are simply not useful to you. You have a few options to move forward from here: donate, sell, or store them.

Donation is a terrific way to “pay it forward.” By donating no longer wanted items to charitable organizations, you receive the benefits of tax deductions for the value of the items and a sense of a good deed well done.

Here are some organizations that would be grateful to receive and distribute items:

• Big Brothers, Big Sisters
• The Local Veterans Association
• The Humane Society
• Goodwill
• Salvation Army
• Island Harvest Food Pantry

Selling items can be a bit more labor intensive. There are buy and sell communities formed on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, Craig’s List, and eBay. You can have a yard sale or advertise items in the classified section of your local newspaper (many will let you advertise online for free.)

Finally, for items that you don’t want to keep in your home, but still want in your possession (this usually holds true for inherited items from a beloved friend or relative), a reputable storage facility is the way to go. Steinway Moving & Storage offers a safe and secure place for your possessions. They have a vaulted storage system that combines advanced technology with good old-fashioned care to protect your stored goods. Every single item is carefully inventoried and added into their barcode system. Upholstered furniture is stretch-wrapped so it can be returned in the same condition in which it was brought in. Each storage vault is pad wrapped for further protection.

A move to a new home can be cathartic. It’s an exciting time in your life to start over with a fresh, clean slate. It’s the perfect time to consider every object you own and to take control of your stuff – before it controls you.
