For many, the most difficult component of moving any great distance is the prospect of organizing and consolidating a lifetime’s worth of belongings into a neatly labeled and packaged assortment of boxes for transport. From collecting the right supplies to room-by-room packing tips and tricks, let’s explore a few of the more helpful methods to use when gearing up for this major lifestyle change.

Start With Supplies

Be sure to stock up on a variety of moving boxes, ideally, in several different shapes and sizes. Don’t skimp on quality, as these containers should be well-equipped to hold up for the long haul. Packing paper and bubble wrap are a mover’s best friend, especially when it comes to protecting those fragile collectibles. For larger items, moving blankets can serve to cushion furniture, mirrors and other delicate pieces from unnecessary chips and scratches.

Often overlooked in the moving process are mattress and furniture covers, which can prove useful when it comes to keeping things clean and dry throughout transport. And finally, keeping it all together, packing tape, to thoroughly reinforce and seal boxes and containers en route to their destination!

Room by Room

Every home is different, as are the belongings each person chooses to take along to his or her new abode. While the packing process may vary, depending upon the particular situation, setting and schedule, the following are some basic guidelines to follow while sorting through the contents of your living space:

Kitchen

The home of fragile plates and glasses, this room is well served by gathering any partitioned boxes you can and wrapping breakables in bubble or foam for added protection. Towels, too, make a handy cushion in between items. Silverware should be wrapped in silver paper or cloth if possible, to avoid tarnishing. If original boxes are available, it is best to use them to repackage any small appliances.

Bed & Bath

The most efficient practice is to move dressers and nightstands with their contents inside; this saves space and avoids the need for extra boxes for clothing. Linens and towels can be packed separately, or used to protect more fragile items. Things like makeup palettes and perfume bottles can be insulated by socks and other soft fabrics. Any valuables such as jewelry, daily medications and a small supply of toiletries, should be set aside in a separate box so as to be easily accessed on the day of the move.

Living Room & Decor

As this room typically contains the most decorative items, it is important to consolidate as much as possible when packing. Use original boxes if available, especially for computers or other tech products, and disassemble larger pieces to make for easier transport. Any wall hangings should be thoroughly wrapped with furniture pads for added protection, and should be packed standing up, to avoid breakage.

Lawn & Garage

If your home includes an outdoor area, you may have various pieces of equipment in need of transport, as well. Be sure to drain all gasoline and oil from lawn mowers and hedge trimmers, as these can prove to be flammable. Bundle gardening tools together to save space, and try to contain heavier items in smaller boxes, to allow for easier mobility.

Best Practices

The more time you have to prepare, the better. As soon as you have a tentative moving date penciled in, it’s advisable to begin the packing process. Start by gathering your nonessential items, like books, CDs, DVDs and knick-knacks, taking care to secure all boxes with tape and line them with paper.

Typically, the more content packed into each box, the less potential for these items to be damaged during transport. Odd-shaped items like pillows can be contained in large kitchen trash bags, providing protection while not wasting a box. And of course, be sure to label everything clearly to make the unpacking process just as painless!

Moving tends to be a stressful time for all involved, but with the proper planning and packing strategy, much of the difficult work can be streamlined well in advance of the official moving day.
