As New York winters seem to get longer and colder each year, more and more New Yorkers are fleeing to the warmth of the south to save them from enduring freezing temperatures.

In fact, even the New York snowbirds are settling down in Florida.

According to the Census Bureau report last year, Florida surpassed New York to claim the rank of the third most populous state in the U.S., right behind California and Texas, with just about 20 million residents.

And Florida has New York to thank for its prestigious rise in the ranks.

Each year New York sends more people to Florida than any other state, with approximately 50,000 New Yorkers seeking permanent refuge in the Sunshine State.

And they aren’t all retirees either.

Surprisingly 78% of New York transplants are under the age of 60, making Florida a residency that’s truly beginning to appeal to the masses. Sprawling beaches, a bright nightlife and endless activities prove that making the journey from NY to Florida is for more than the 60 and older club. And with the warmer climate and lack of state income tax, who can really blame them?

There are many reasons why Florida is so massively loved by New Yorkers.

Aside from the obvious (that gorgeous weather), a lack of an income tax just sits well on many people, retirees included. With a fixed income, not having to pay taxes when you don’t have to is a major plus for senior citizens.

The lower cost of living is another deciding factor when moving from New York to Florida. In Florida, you get a lot more bang for your buck, and New Yorkers are starting to catch on.

But for those who aren’t ready to throw in their New York towel, dual residency is always an option.

In fact, many New Yorkers just make their way down the I-95 for the winter months and shoot right back up again when the Northeast’s flowers start blooming. For true snowbirds, storage services can come in handy for keeping their belongings safe while they’re in their second home.
