A lot of planning goes into a move, and though hiring movers can definitely cut down on the workload, doing so may bring up a few questions. One common question people have is whether they should tip movers. Here's what you need to know before the movers arrive for the job.

Just as with most other situations in which professionals provide a service, tipping is not mandatory, but it is appreciated. This is especially the case when you have a lot of boxes or heavy furniture that you need the movers to handle. Even if the job is fairly quick and simple, if you get excellent customer service, you might consider tipping your movers.

How Much Should You Tip?

The amount of the tip is up to you. But, on average, it's 15 to 20 percent of the total cost of the move, divided evenly among the movers. If you don't want to figure out a percentage, $10 to $20 per person for a move that takes most of the day is often considered fair. You can always tip more if you feel the movers went above and beyond for you. The same goes if the job was particularly hard, such as if you have stairs or lots of heavy items to move.
