A lot of planning goes into a move, and though hiring movers can definitely cut down on the workload, doing so may bring up a few questions. One common question people have is whether they should tip movers. Here's what you need to know before the movers arrive for the job.

Should You Tip Your Movers?

Just as with most other situations in which professionals provide a service, tipping is not mandatory, but it is appreciated. This is especially the case when you have a lot of boxes or heavy furniture that you need the movers to handle. Even if the job is fairly quick and simple, if you get excellent customer service, you might consider tipping your movers.

How Much Should You Tip?

The amount of the tip is up to you. But, on average, it's 15 to 20 percent of the total cost of the move, divided evenly among the movers. If you don't want to figure out a percentage, $10 to $20 per person for a move that takes most of the day is often considered fair. You can always tip more if you feel the movers went above and beyond for you. The same goes if the job was particularly hard, such as if you have stairs or lots of heavy items to move.

Who Do You Tip?

It's often simplest to hand the tip to the foreman, who will divide the money up among the movers. You can also tip movers individually if you'd prefer. It's up to you.

When Do You Tip Movers?

It's most common to tip the movers once they've done the job. This way, you can tip accordingly, depending on the level of service they provided.

Can You Tip With Food or Drinks?

It's best to stick to cash when you tip movers. You can still offer them food and drinks, especially when the move takes all day. And, offering water, particularly on a hot day, is always appreciated. But generally, food and drinks are not considered a tip. Also, keep in mind that most movers are not allowed to accept alcoholic drinks, so it's best not to offer them.
