We’ve talked about some packing do’s and don’ts, but what do you do when you actually get your belongings to your new home?

Is there a smart way to go about unpacking?

YOU BET!

We know that unpacking can feel a little overwhelming initially, so we’ve gathered some advice on which rooms to unpack first for a more streamlined approach!

Here are some tips to staying organized when you finally get to your new place:

1. KNOW WHAT YOU’RE UNPACKING

Refer to your handy inventory list to know exactly what you’ll be unpacking. Place designated, labeled boxes in their appropriate room assignments to ensure that you won’t be opening up the bathroom supplies in the kitchen.

2. UNPACK THE KITCHEN FIRST

Eating is essential. Unpack the bigger items: pots, pans, dishes and major appliances first. You can fully organize later, but make sure that your kitchen essentials are done.

3. UNPACK THE BEDROOMS SECOND

You want to make sure that you and your family have a comfortable place to crash! Set up all your bedroom furniture to ensure that your first night in your new place is relaxing. You can organize your closets as time permits later.

4. UNPACK THE BATHROOM NEXT

As with your other rooms, unpack the major essentials first. You can always go back to sprucing up your bathroom(s) once the rest of your home is laid out.

5. PUT YOUR FURNITURE TOGETHER

Ideally, you’ll already have a plan in place for all your furniture. Once you know exactly where everything is going to go, you should assemble and/or locate your bigger pieces first.

Remember, focus your efforts on handling your essentials first rather than fully completing one entire space at a time. This will ensure that your home is functional and livable from the start, giving you the time to perfect the details later.
